The Reed Institute for Applied Statistics
On December 31, 2007, the Reed Institute for Applied Statistics closed its doors. Since its inception in 1975 as the Institute for Decision Science, the Ruth K. and Joseph C. Reed Institute for Applied Statistics emphasized applied statistics, data analysis and practical experience in the education of students interested in business, public policy and the professions. In providing the opportunity for students to engage in student-faculty research and consulting on significant "real world" problems, the Institute opened many doors to excellent careers for CMC graduates.
Professor Janet Myhre, the Dengler-Dykema Professor of Mathematics and Mathematical Economics at Claremont McKenna College and Director of the Reed Institute since its founding, is completing some legacy projects during the Spring semester 2008 under the auspices of the Reed Institute. “After more than forty-five years as a CMC professor and more than thirty years of working with extraordinary CMC and Claremont College students on Institute projects, I am extremely sorry to see the Institute close” said Janet Myhre. “I carry with me fond memories of students who excelled on significant ‘real-world’ projects for Institute clients and who have gone on to lead meaningful professional and personal lives. I want to thank all of my students who participated in the clinic programs and Institute projects over the years. These students have made my career at CMC very meaningful to me. I also want to thank the talented and thoughtful members of the Institute’s advisory board who served student interests faithfully. Finally, I wish to give my thanks to Ruth Reed for her personal and financial contributions to the education of Claremont students.”
The Reed Institute was the third research institute at Claremont McKenna College, following the Henry Salvatori Center for the Study of Individual Freedom in the Modern World (1969) and the Rose Institute for State and Local Government (1973). Currently, there are ten research centers and institutes at the College.
To honor professor Janet Myhre and her late husband, professor Leon Hollerman, the College has established a scholarship fund in their name. To learn more and to make a contribution to this fund, click here.
